It's not really "the fiber," it's what the fiber does

Polyester on its own isn't dangerous. The problem is structural: it's a tightly-woven synthetic that doesn't absorb water the way natural fibers do, so it can't do the basic job clothing does — pull moisture away from your body. Cotton absorbs roughly 27 times its own weight in water. Polyester absorbs about 0.4%. Whatever your skin produces during a normal day, or a workout, or just a humid afternoon, mostly just... sits there, between your skin and the fabric.

Why that leads to smell and skin issues

That trapped moisture and heat is a small, warm, damp environment — exactly what certain bacteria like. A peer-reviewed study comparing polyester and cotton T-shirts after exercise found the two fabrics didn't just smell differently in degree, they grew different bacteria altogether. A species called Micrococcus — a known odor producer — colonized nearly every polyester shirt tested and grew to as much as 17.2 million CFU per square centimeter, while it barely grew on cotton at all. Beyond odor, that same trapped heat and friction is a documented contributor to "acne mechanica" — breakouts caused by heat, sweat, and friction rather than by pores clogging with product. And for anyone with eczema or generally reactive skin, synthetic fabrics make things measurably worse: an estimated 60–70% of people with atopic dermatitis report symptom flare-ups when wearing synthetics. Worth being precise here — dermatologists say a true allergy to the polyester fiber itself is rare. What's more often behind the irritation is the chemical load that comes with it: disperse dyes, formaldehyde-based resins, and finishing agents used to treat the fabric, which are known irritants for a meaningful share of sensitive-skin populations.

What about microplastics?

This one deserves a straight answer instead of a scary headline. Recent research using 3D human skin models found that certain chemical additives from microplastics can be absorbed through skin — up to 8% of the exposure dose in some tests, with sweaty skin absorbing more than dry skin. That's real and worth taking seriously. But it's also worth being precise: that particular study focused on polyethylene and polypropylene (think shopping bags and packaging), not polyester specifically, and one of the researchers involved was careful to flag that distinction. So the honest version of this is: synthetic textiles are a live area of research on microplastic and chemical exposure, and the concern is legitimate — but "polyester clothing is dosing you with plastic" isn't yet a settled, proven claim. The moisture-trapping, bacteria, and skin-irritation issues above are the better-established reasons to think twice.
